Engaging Our Community

Community Engagement

As a means of God's grace in the community, we work with the larger body of Christ in Sonora. Along with the St. John's Episcopal Church, First Baptist Church, Church of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, Sonora Church of Christ, St. Ann's Roman Catholic Church we are engaging our community through our ministries and as part of the Sonora Ministerial Alliance.

The Ministerial Alliance

The Ministerial Alliance of Sonora allows all the churches in Sonora to work together for the betterment of our community. They take turns giving the sermon at the baccalaureate service, coordinate the Lenten lunches, create the program at the Christmas parade and help those in need during emergency situations.

Prayer and School

We have a yearly prayer walk around the schools asking for guidance and protection for the students at the beginning of the year.  At other times, ministers are invited by students to pray at groups and events.

Lenten Lunches

Every Wednesday during Lent (except for during spring break) St. Johns Episcopal Church hosts a free luncheon at noon. During this luncheon Pastors in the Ministerial Alliance take turns speaking and engaging in discussion with the community.

Back to School

To support families in returning back to school, we have a Back to School outreach that provides children with school supplies for the new year!

Fellowship of Christian Students

Expanding on the foundation of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the students of Sonora ISD opened the fellowship up to all who want to grow in their relationship with God and Jesus Christ. Churches within the community take turns providing lunch to these students to help facilitate their meetings.

Scholarships

To help support our students in their future endeavors we provide scholarships for our high school graduates.

College Care Packages

To continue supporting our college age members we send them a yearly care package. We strive to help them stay connected with our community and let them know we are thinking of them.

VBS

Every year Sonora FUMC and St. John's Episcopal Church host a Vacation Bible School. We work with our community to find volunteers so that the kids have a memorable experience.

Christmas Programs

What better way to celebrate the season of giving than by giving back to the community that has supported us. Outside of our regular services, we host a children's program followed by a caroling hayride.
